How Skrill works at online casinos

Skrill is an e-wallet: an online account that holds a balance you can spend at merchants without handing over your card or bank details each time. You sign up with an email address, then load money into the wallet from a card, a bank transfer or another supported method.

To deposit at a casino, choose Skrill in the cashier, enter the amount and log in to Skrill to confirm. The payment is taken from your wallet balance. For a withdrawal, request a payout to Skrill in the casino cashier. Once the casino approves it, the money lands in your Skrill balance, and from there you can spend it, keep it or move it to your bank account.

Typical speed

Deposits are usually instant once confirmed. Withdrawals depend first on the casino, which reviews and approves payout requests on its own schedule. After that, e-wallet payouts are often among the quicker options, commonly within a day or two. Transferring money from Skrill on to your bank is a separate step and takes longer.

Fees

Skrill publishes its charges on its fee page; the amounts vary by region and change over time, so check the current page for your account before you rely on any figure. In general terms, Skrill's fee page describes:

  • no transaction fee for paying a merchant directly from your Skrill wallet;
  • no fee for receiving money into your Skrill account;
  • a charge for withdrawing from the wallet to a bank account;
  • a foreign exchange fee when a payment involves currency conversion;
  • a service fee on accounts left inactive for a long period.

Loading your wallet may also cost something, depending on the funding method. On top of Skrill's charges, the casino may apply its own deposit or withdrawal fee, so read the cashier terms too.

Bonuses

Some casinos exclude e-wallet deposits, including Skrill, from welcome offers and other promotions. This is not universal. Check the bonus terms before you deposit if a bonus matters to you.

Privacy and identity checks

The casino sees your Skrill payment, not your card or bank details. That adds a layer of privacy, but it is not anonymous. Skrill states that, as a regulated financial institution, it must verify its customers. You can use an unverified account only up to a limit, after which Skrill asks for photo ID, proof of address and some information about how you use the account.

Licensed casinos run their own identity checks (KYC) as well, usually before the first withdrawal. Casinos generally require payments in your own name, so your Skrill account should be registered to the same person as your casino account.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Card and bank details stay away from the casino
  • Deposits are usually instant
  • Payouts are often faster than bank transfers
  • One wallet can be used at many merchants

Cons

  • Currency conversion and bank withdrawals cost money, according to Skrill's fee page
  • Inactive accounts can be charged a service fee
  • Some casinos exclude e-wallet deposits from bonuses
  • Verification is needed once you pass Skrill's limits

Practical tips

  • Keep your Skrill wallet and casino account in the same currency to avoid conversion fees.
  • Log in now and then, or close an unused account, to avoid the inactivity fee.
  • Verify both your Skrill account and your casino account before you need a withdrawal.
  • Many casinos send payouts back to the deposit method, so deposit with the method you want to be paid to.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication in your Skrill security settings.

Gambling is for adults aged 18 and over. Set a budget before you play and use the casino's deposit limits and other safer-gambling tools.
